An Overview of Morton’s Neuroma

One common cause of foot pain is Morton’s neuroma, a thickening of the nerve tissue between the toes. This condition usually affects the space between the third and fourth toes and causes symptoms such as burning pain, tingling, numbness, and a strange sensation akin to walking on a pebble. Pain is often worsened by wearing shoes that are too tight or have high heels. Morton’s neuroma is diagnosed through medical history and physical examination. In some cases, imaging studies may be needed to rule out other causes of foot pain. Treatment is typically conservative and includes resting and icing the foot, wearing orthotics, and taking medications to reduce pain. If you have symptoms of Morton’s neuroma, please seek the care of a podiatrist.

Morton’s neuroma is a very uncomfortable condition to live with. If you think you have Morton’s neuroma, contact one of our podiatrists of Footcare Now. Our doctors will attend to all of your foot care needs and answer any of your related questions.

Morton’s Neuroma

Morton's neuroma is a painful foot condition that commonly affects the areas between the second and third or third and fourth toe, although other areas of the foot are also susceptible. Morton’s neuroma is caused by an inflamed nerve in the foot that is being squeezed and aggravated by surrounding bones.

What Increases the Chances of Having Morton’s Neuroma?

  • Ill-fitting high heels or shoes that add pressure to the toe or foot
  • Jogging, running or any sport that involves constant impact to the foot
  • Flat feet, bunions, and any other foot deformities

Morton’s neuroma is a very treatable condition. Orthotics and shoe inserts can often be used to alleviate the pain on the forefront of the feet. In more severe cases, corticosteroids can also be prescribed. In order to figure out the best treatment for your neuroma, it’s recommended to seek the care of a podiatrist who can diagnose your condition and provide different treatment options.

When to See the Podiatrist for a Broken Toe

If you have injured your toe and notice that it is red, bruised, swollen, painful, or difficult to walk on, you may have broken your toe. A mild toe fracture may respond to conservative treatments, such as resting and icing the foot, taking pain medication, wearing comfortable shoes or orthotics, and taping the broken toe to the healthy toe next to it. A more severe fracture, however, will require more serious medical intervention. If you have injured your toe and have pain or swelling that lingers after two or three days, have difficulty walking up to six weeks after the initial injury, or if you have diabetes, it is suggested that you seek the care of a podiatrist. If you have an open fracture, with the broken bone poking through your skin, please seek medical attention immediately to prevent permanent damage and infections. For more information, please consult with a podiatrist.

Broken toes may cause a lot of pain and should be treated as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Footcare Now. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is a Broken Toe?

A broken toe occurs when one or more of the toe bones of the foot are broken after an injury. Injuries such as stubbing your toe or dropping a heavy object on it may cause a toe fracture.

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Swelling
  • Pain (with/without wearing shoes)
  • Stiffness
  • Nail Injury

Although the injured toe should be monitored daily, it is especially important to have a podiatrist look at your toe if you have severe symptoms. Some of these symptoms include worsening or new pain that is not relieved with medication, sores, redness, or open wounds near the toe.

What Is Causing My Foot Pain?

There are a multitude of reasons why your feet may hurt, including sprains, strains, fractures, bunions, and fungal infections. These can range from mild injuries to serious traumas or underlying medical conditions. An important way to find out what is causing your foot pain is by seeing a podiatrist. Note the type of pain you are experiencing and where it is to help your podiatrist diagnose the cause. For example, if you have sharp, stabbing pain in your heel, you may have plantar fasciitis. This is an injury that occurs when the ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot becomes inflamed because of repetitive stress and overuse. If you have foot pain, please schedule an appointment with a podiatrist near you.

Preventing Sweaty Feet

Plantar hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that can cause excessive sweating in the feet. This problem can not only be uncomfortable and embarrassing, but also a contributing factor to other foot problems, such as fungal infections of the skin and toenails. Plantar hyperhidrosis is best treated by a professional, however there are some steps that you can take to reduce foot sweating in your day to day life. These include wearing socks that wick moisture away from your feet, wearing shoes made of breathable materials, and maintaining good foot hygiene. Over-the-counter antiperspirants and antifungal powders can also be helpful. If you suffer from excessively sweaty feet, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with a podiatrist near you.

Hyperhidrosis of the Feet

Hyperhidrosis is a rare disorder that can cause people to have excessive sweating of their feet. This can usually occur all on its own without rigorous activity involved. People who suffer from hyperhidrosis may also experience sweaty palms.

Although it is said that sweating is a healthy process meant to cool down the body temperature and to maintain a proper internal temperature, hyperhidrosis may prove to be a huge hindrance on a person’s everyday life.

Plantar hyperhidrosis is considered to be the main form of hyperhidrosis. Secondary hyperhidrosis can refer to sweating that occurs in areas other than the feet or hands and armpits. Often this may be a sign of it being related to another medical condition such as menopause, hyperthyroidism and even Parkinson’s disease.

In order to alleviate this condition, it is important to see your doctor so that they may prescribe the necessary medications so that you can begin to live a normal life again. If this is left untreated, it is said that it will persist throughout an individual’s life.

A last resort approach would be surgery, but it is best to speak with your doctor to find out what may be the best treatment for you.
